Celebrating 50

Years of Deadly

Last week, we celebrated NAIDOC Week, with this year's theme, 50 Years of Deadly, recognising the generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have kept culture strong, driven change and paved the way for future generations.

Across the Macleay Valley, the week was filled with opportunities for our community to come together, celebrate culture and create lasting memories.

Our engagement with the celebrations began on Sunday 5 July with the Mustangs Indigenous Round. It was an incredible day where Elders, young people and families came together to celebrate culture, share stories and enjoy a day of connection through sport. It was a wonderful way to begin our week, bringing the community together to honour the generations who continue to keep culture strong.

On Monday 6 July, we stood proud and loud as we marched with our community, showing our support and solidarity.

Then on Monday afternoon we supported the Kids Disco, creating a fun and welcoming space where children could dance, play and simply enjoy being together.

Later in the week, on Thursday 9 July, we co-hosted Bellbrook NAIDOC Day, another fantastic celebration filled with activities for the whole community. From the jumping castle and colour run to weaving, arts and crafts, and music from DJ Terry, there was something for everyone to enjoy, with one of the highlights being Elders from Booroongen Djugun and Macleay Valley Care Facility coming together to play bingo. It was wonderful to see everyone connecting, laughing and sharing the day together.

We couldn't have made this week possible without our incredible team, our partners Buthikarrung Connected Beginnings Kempsey and Dhina Durriti Aboriginal Corporation, and all the organisations across our community that hosted events throughout the week. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, participated and helped create such welcoming spaces for our community. Seeing so many organisations working side by side is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose.

As we reflect on this year's celebrations, we're reminded that NAIDOC Week is about recognising the strength, resilience and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, celebrating culture, and continuing to build a community where everyone feels connected and belongs. It's also an opportunity to strengthen relationships, create new opportunities and share knowledge across generations.

After a week filled with connection, laughter and community spirit, we're feeling more deadly than ever and looking forward to carrying that spirit with us throughout the year.
